WHAT IS ALTO?
The Arizona Labor Trafficking Outreach (ALTO) project was created by the Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research at Arizona State University in September 2021 to specifically address the lack of proactive outreach tailored for victims of labor exploitation and trafficking. Specifically, ALTO's mission is to support and empower workers in Arizona by providing education on labor rights and increasing awareness of available community resources. To date, ALTO has connected with over 300 day laborers.
ALTO is comprised of and supported by a number of different social service organizations and government agencies including International Rescue Committee, Chicanos Por La Causa, Mexico Consulate in Phoenix, Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services, The Florence Project, A New Life Center, Phoenix Dream Center, StreetlightUSA, Arizona Anti-Trafficking Network, Arizona Human Trafficking Council, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
WHAT DOES ALTO DO?
Each month, ALTO conducts visits to different locations around the valley where day laborers frequently gather. During these street-level outreach efforts, ALTO volunteers distribute snack packs, share Know Your Rights shoe cards, and engage in meaningful conversations with laborers around education about worker rights. Additionally, workers are offered information about community services that can assist individuals who have been victims of labor trafficking, including case management, legal advocacy, immigration assistance, and more.
